scarborough environmental group

The Scarborough Environmental Group (SEG) is a community-led initiative focused on environmental conservation and sustainable living. Through partnerships and dedicated volunteers, SEG addresses issues like effluent management and dune preservation while empowering individuals to contribute to a greener, more sustainable future. SEG actively organizes beach clean-ups, waste management efforts, and awareness campaigns about critical issues such as marine plastic pollution and wildlife conservation.

The general tasks include fundraising and finance, covering general contributions, donations, and support for events like the Mussel Festival, as well as communication and website management, along with overall coordination.

bio center

The core project, the Biodynamic Centre, serves as a hub for eco-conscious practices. The focus includes hosting events, talks, and documentaries about Scarborough and ecology, managing Airbnb’s checklist and communications, promoting Scarborough’s “dark skies” and zero-waste initiatives, and organizing kid-friendly activities like eco-bricks and beach cleanups.

Efforts include composting kitchen and garden waste for resale, maintaining and clearing dog poo bins at beach entries while composting the waste, and promoting veggie gardening initiatives. Recycling focus on paper, glass, and aluminum, while a weekly market supports local vegetable farmers from Ocean View and Rocklands.

birds, beaches and dunes

The Scarborough Bio Centre is dedicated to safeguarding the delicate ecosystems of beaches and dunes. Activities include regular litter cleanup on the beach and in bins (beach, boardwalk, parking area). The centre also focuses on protecting wildlife, such as plover chicks and other coastal birds, by introducing exclosures and educating the public on respectful beach behavior. These efforts ensure that the unique habitats along Scarborough’s coastline are preserved for future generations.

alien clearing and weeding

Alien clearing efforts are carried out through a dedicated hacking group, while manual weeding is conducted along several roads to prevent the City from using glyphosate for weed control.

clean water

Efforts include testing and collecting data on wastewater management systems, conducting water quality testing in Scarborough’s rivers, and gathering survey data within the community. Findings are then reported back to the community to promote awareness and informed decision-making.
